Objectives
Reporters Club Nepal (RCN) was founded with the supreme objective of unearthing news and views from all social and political actors and thus informs the people about what is in store for them.
The task of literally unearthing everything that makes news is vital in the country where freedom of the press has been a taboo in the bygone years. However much of that has changed with changes in the political front after 1990.
But mere political changes did not guarantee interaction between the representatives of the press and those who presided over the affairs of the state in the absence of the right media culture.
This stands ruled out since the successive governments have never made a point to brief the media about the day to day affairs of the respective ministries and departments, thus keeping the nation in the dark.
But RCN is accomplishing the job of an informer for the press by holding regular interaction sessions about the functioning of the government. Add to it regular interaction sessions with the political parties. This ensures flow of information and strategies being adopted by respective political parties on any given issue.
This is going a long way in throwing up enough food for thought for reporters covering respective beats while also ensuring steady supply of what the parties are involved in. With this as backdrop the objectives can be summarized as below:
• To work to have the governments uphold democracy in all its facets;
• To work to reinforce the culture of free flow of information and freedom of the press;
• To prod governments and policy-makers to pursue politics for economic development;
• To lobby in favor of transparency in governance;
• To highlight the values of human rights;
• To highlight the values of children's and women's rights;
• To highlight the importance of peaceful resolution of conflicts
• To highlight the importance of a pragmatic foreign policy
